Numeracy

Numeracy at Watling View consists of Number and Geometry. A key component of numeracy is to enable pupils to explore, investigate and understand the world through learning and applying mathematical knowledge, concepts and by making connections. It is important that pupils develop numeracy skills which will support them in everyday life at Watling View and beyond. This means we want pupils to be able to develop conceptual understanding and have the ability to recall and apply knowledge, be mathematically challenged whilst also having the opportunity to consolidate skills and knowledge in to the wider community.

The numeracy curriculum at Watling View follows a topic based approach to it whilst providing opportunities to link back to the half termly theme. Approaches such as Numicon, shopping and cooking play an important part to learning numeracy skills, knowledge and concepts. The cross curricular nature of numeracy is important for pupils at Watling View so that they can truly embed skills and knowledge in all areas and so that they are prepared for adulthood and life beyond Watling View this includes remembering mathematical procedures in day to day life.

Learning will look different within each department, pupils in the Early Years have a focus on getting young people engaged in numeracy and introducing concepts and procedures through play based learning. Pupils in Lower / Middle School build on these concepts through learning skills and knowledge and starting to apply these in to skills for everyday life. As pupils move into the Upper School learning focuses on the functional and practical application of skills and knowledge which have been learnt and an increased link to the practical application of these. Trips to local shops and supermarkets supports to deepen knowledge of money and for pupils in the Upper School work experience in the café builds on reinforcing connections across applying concepts and procedures in practical ways.

At all stages of the curriculum it is important that pupils are developing an understanding to solve problems and make connections across areas, this is achieved through both the discreet numeracy lessons and cross curricular approaches.

By applying numeracy learning in this way it means that pupils at Watling View are demonstrating an ability to remember and apply numeracy skills, knowledge and concepts in a wide range of contexts and environments and that pupils make progress through the planned curriculum as well as in their Personalised Learning Goals. This is achieved by ensuring pupils are exposed to teaching that creates a fun, engaging and high quality numeracy curriculum.
