Watling View School

Literacy

Literacy at Watling View aims to provide pupils with a breadth of knowledge and skills primarily in reading, writing and communication. Classes on the national curriculum pathway have at least 3 discreet Literacy lessons a week and follow a half termly termly topic cycle which links to the half termly theme. As part of our Literacy curriculum we want pupils at Watling View to have the confidence to express themselves, understand language at a level relevant to the individual and to foster and maintain a life-long love of reading sharing stories and discovering new texts.

Learning for pupils is enabled through curriculum delivery with enthusiasm, individuality and hands on experience, whilst taking into account the individuals learning needs and priorities. Approaches to delivery can include, but are not limited to, Colourful Semantics, Write Dance, Story Massage and Sensory Stories.  The literacy curriculum differs depending on which department the pupil is in. Pupils in Early Years will learn through exposure to nursery rhymes, songs and familiar stories. Pupils in Lower / Middle School will have the opportunity to learn about a breadth of genres and will experience a variety of books as well as learning about text and information through texts and stories which have direct links to their day to day life. In the Upper School pupils are learning a more functional approach to Literacy and practical application of acquired skills and knowledge so they are prepared for adulthood and life beyond Watling View.

Having a sharp focus on Literacy skills and knowledge both within the Literacy curriculum and across all areas of the curriculum means that pupils are acquiring the skills and knowledge through the planned curriculum alongside achieving targets in their Personalised Learning Goals. At Watling View, we place an emphasis on the development of these areas and see that reading and communication are vital to enable our learners to be as independent as they possibly can be in accessing curriculum learning and to enable each and every individual to be as confident and independent as they can be by the time they leave Watling View. Parent involvement is an important part of Literacy development for our pupils and we have recently delivered parent workshops in Colourful Semantics, Reading & Phonics and Multi-Sensory Approaches to Writing.
