Watling View School

Department - Lower/Middle School

At Watling View we have the overall aim to develop individuals social, life, independence, communication and key skills of individuals. For more information about how the Lower / Middle School achieves this please see below.

A core aim of the Lower / Middle School is to provide opportunities for all pupils to broaden their learning experiences and opportunities. Once pupils at Watling View School have transitioned from our Early Years classes they join Lower Middle School, which usually supports children from Year 3 to Year 9 across 6 classes; Daffodils, Tulips, Poppies, Bluebells, Sunflowers and Adventurers. We follow a broad and engaging thematic curriculum which rolls on a 4 year programme including motivating and sensory led topics such as ‘The Circus’, ‘Land, Sea and Sky’ and ‘Carnival’. Lower Middle School aims to prepare children and young people with the knowledge and skills they need in a fast changing world through a rounded education and a wide range of opportunities to broaden the horizons of each individual. We believe every child has the right to be as independent as possible so skills to develop, enable and support our children and young people are taught within our curriculum and in everyday activities, expectations and opportunities.

The school’s assessment programme of ‘Child on a Page’ supports this curriculum and the ImPACTS curriculum to measure and record all steps of progress for our students and young people alongside their aspirations, EHCP targets and any additional learning opportunities they have accessed. Lower Middle School prides itself on supporting the school’s values of a Total Communication approach to our teaching and learning.  The curriculum is developed and delivered through careful planning and assessment of individual needs.

What Families Say About Lower / Middle School

I can't believe what my daughter is able to do since joining Watling View. The school has transformed my daughter's and my families life.

I am really happy with the progress my son has made at school I can see this progress at home as well.

My son loves going to school and is really happy. He has made good progress at school and his understanding has improved. His safety awareness has got better. He is able to go to the supermarket and pack things away in the correct places. He is now able to cook egg on toast and clear up afterwards.

My daughter has made progress in ways which I never expected her to. She is able to make choices and access the community.
