Assessment at Watling View

At Watling view we want to make sure that we assess what really matters. In our opinion that is the whole person. Therefore we assess pupil progress against the sequenced curriculum using Satellite Targets alongside termly targets linked to pupils EHCP outcomes called Journey Targets.

Assessment is an important aspect of teaching and learning as it supports teachers in identifying next steps.  Teachers currently have 3 data collection points during the year and are followed by pupils progress meetings. Pupil progress meetings are held to review the progress individuals have made in the last term and to review the proposed Personal Learning Goals for the next half term.

Watling View assesses pupil's academic progress in different ways depending on the curriculum framework they follow. These are either I Can Statements, ImPACTs assessment framework, Early Years Outcomes and / or the Independence Profile.

Each term we will send home evaluated PLGs alongside the proposed new termly PLGs so that we can consult with families about the new targets and make sure all stakeholders are clear on what the key learning priorities are going to be for the next term, alongside strategies for achieving these targets.

The school has worked as part of a group of special schools in Brent, Harrow and Hertfordshire to create and develop ‘I can’ statements in English, Maths, Science, PSHEC and ICT.

Child on a Page

 Child on a Page is an Excel workbook resource used at Watling View as a tool for promoting and tracking pupil progress. It is designed to draw together different aspects of the Watling View curriculum model and store information in one place for every pupil. It is a curriculum, teaching and assessment tool, in that it is used for target-setting, provision planning, summative assessment and progress-tracking.

Personal Learning Goals

 Personal Learning Goals (PLGs) are the primary mechanism we use to plan, deliver and review personalised provision for pupils. All pupils have 10 termly PLGs;

  • 5 Journey Targets – directly linked to the long term targets set out in their EHCP documents
  • 5 Satellite Targets – attainment descriptors drawn from the core subjects of school curriculum frameworks
